Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he “always assessing” his position at the club, but he remains convinced that this troubled season can end successfully.

The Sunday World revealed last month that Van Gaal would assess his future as United boss at the end of this season, leaving the door open for his resignation if he failed to deliver the success he promised.

Now the United boss has gone public with those sentiments, as he spoke ahead of his side's FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham on Sunday.

“I am always evaluating myself so that is not a problem," he told reporters, before commenting on the issue of whether he might resign as he replied:

"I cannot discuss this question with you at the moment."

Van Gaal came in for another round of criticism after his side's 2-0 Europa League defeat against Liverpool on Thursday, with the FA Cup clash against West Ham now crucial to their hopes of success this season.

“The FA Cup can save the season, the Europa League can also save my season, and a position in the top four can also save my season.

“It is still possible. It is very difficult, I know that, but it is still possible.

“Now, when you lose a game, it is a disaster. But this is a sport where you can lose and you can win.

“I have been told by the media that I am getting the sack for the last three months.

“But I am still in three competitions – and a lot of colleagues cannot say that at this stage of the season.”

Jose Mourinho remains the hot favourite to replace Van Gaal as United boss, even though the Sunday World understands there is still opposition to his appointment from senior Old Trafford officials.
